Suburban Oasis

An ordinary suburban house, rather empty. One permanent resident. Two spare bedrooms. One airbed. Unused rumpus room. Big garage. Front yard, back yard. This is a rented place so any artwork done in/on the place must be temporary or removable. Or you could use it as a base for explorations and operations. Interested in the ordinary? Minimalist aesthetic? Opportunity to participate in lawn care? All that is provided in abundance.

Alamosa on the Rio Grande, commercial and administrative center of the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado. There is an ample supply of sunshine, potatoes, sagebrush, mountain views. About 8,600 people live here. 3400 students attend Adams State College here. It is warm and dry in summer, very cold and dry in winter. The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is nearby. Artists can fly into town on a 14 seater plane with propellers, ride the splendid Greyhound coach, or drive their own automobile through the mountains and desert. I can loan you a bicycle when you get here. Rental cars are available at the airport.

Claire van der Plas is an Assistant Professor of Art at Adams State College. She is a painter, gardener, traveler and a good cook.
